the Monroe
Co. Historical Society. The county and township maps
found on this site have been duplicated from materials obtained from
the Monroe County Historical
Society. The maps found on this website were prepared
by WPA (Work Program Administration) in 1939. See more information about
these maps below. The students at Edgewood
High School are working in cooperation with the Society to make
this information accessible on the web. If you would like more

May In 1939/1940 the Work Program Administration (WPA) etablished a Grave Registration Program to identify the remains of deceased veteran's, cemeteries and the location of all the marked or unmarked cemeteries in Monroe County. This was no easy task, because in the end there were 258 different cemeteries on 169 range, and exact location in reference to roads, churches or other pertinent landmarks. The cemetery map also shows the grave location and the type of grave marker used to identify a veteran's grave. names of the deceased veterans can be located in the section (Alphabetized by Cemetery Name) of the "deceased Monroe County Veteren's" publication, published by the Monroe County Historical Society. In coordination with the cemetery maps an "Index of Cemeteries by Townships" and "Key Map of Monroe County, State of Indiana showing all cemeteries.. for instance, (page 2, number 1 Able) would be located in Bean Blossom Township, Section 4, and cemetery map number 2. To help locate the cemeteries, detailed maps of the townships are included in the publication, "1939/1940 Maps of Monroe County Cemeteries", available from the Monroe County Historical Society, Bloomington, IN 47408 for a fee. The information was researched and assembled by Claude F. Rice, 1995. |
